Beach Volleyball in Vancouver

Beach Volleyball at KitsilanoThe Vancouver Park Board has designated 10 beach volleyball areas in Vancouver:

English Bay (2) Sunset (1)
Jericho (2) Kitsilano (7)
Locarno Picnic Site (2) Locarno (6)
Spanish Bank East (8) Spanish Bank West (8)
Shaughnessy Street (4)

These courts primarily operate as "casual play" facilities - accommodating unorganized play on a first-come, first-served basis (similar operation to the Board's tennis courts - i.e. permits not generally issued).

Due to the high demand for beach activities (swimming, sunbathing, casual volleyball play, other special events, etc.) and the city's limited beach space, the Board has developed the following guidelines for the use of beaches for organized league play. While the guidelines are designed to ensure organized volleyball has access to beach areas, they also reflect the competing interests for the use of beaches and the impact major volleyball events have on the surrounding park and neighbourhood. The guidelines were developed in consultation with BC Volleyball Association, park neighbours and Park Board Lifeguards and Maintenance staff.

Major Volleyball Events (more than 4 courts)
These league volleyball events are only permitted at Kitsilano, Locarno and Spanish Bank Beaches. League play is limited to one night per week at Kitsilano and Spanish Bank Beaches with a maximum of 16 nets. Their tournaments are limited to one weekend per month at Kitsilano, Locarno and Spanish Bank Beaches. Organizers of the events must be a non-profit society or a non-profit community group.

Minor Volleyball Events (4 or less courts)
The public sand volleyball courts on Vancouver beaches are primarily for drop-in use on a first-come, first-served basis. Minor events may be accommodated at Locarno Beach and the Picnic Site.
